Digital Consulting: AI Visibility as a Management Discipline

Updated 12 October 2026

Digital Consulting is the discipline within aeo that turns AI visibility into a management task: with goals, metrics, responsibilities, and a fixed rhythm. It starts with understanding, not action. Only once it is measured where a company currently stands in AI answers can you decide which lever makes the biggest difference.

Why every project starts with a measurement

Without a measured baseline, you can neither prioritize nor prove success. That is why the audit always comes first — even when the measures are already supposed to be fixed. Only the initial measurement shows which of the five stages a company currently stands on; without this reference point, later changes could not be distinguished from a model update or from chance.

The audit first describes who is asking — role, prior knowledge, decision situation, and the language in which the question is asked. From this the prompt set emerges: branded prompts check whether AI systems describe the company correctly; non-branded prompts measure whether it appears at all in generic subject-matter questions; customer-journey prompts show at which decision stage visibility is missing. The result is the baseline: the documented initial measurement per prompt, per prompt group, and per AI system, benchmarked against competitors.

Goals and metrics

Every measure pays into a defined metric. The metrics follow the five stages of AI visibility: mention, accurate description, recommendation, linking, citation. Added to this are the mention rate per system and topic area, the recommendation rate for non-branded prompts, the citation rate, and the share of model compared to competitors.

There are no absolute target values, because no generally recognized industry norms exist. What is meaningful is the trend against your own baseline and the gap to direct competitors within the same prompt set. This is precisely why measurement comes first and planning second.

Whether a metric holds up is not decided at the drawing board. We continuously align our metrics model with the research that empirically studies visibility in generative systems — and change it whenever a measure proves weak.

Roadmap and responsibilities

From the baseline and the goals emerges a roadmap aligned with corporate strategy — not with the availability of measures. Together with management, we clarify which topic areas, markets, and languages are prioritized, which measures run internally and which externally, and at what rhythm reporting happens.

This also defines responsibility. The topic is best anchored where marketing, communications, and the subject-matter department come together — with one person at management level who backs the goals and priorities. AI visibility touches content, technology, and reputation at the same time; if it is assigned to a single function, two-thirds of the levers regularly go unused.

How the contribution becomes visible

Partly through traffic. From stage four — linking — onward, impact can be traced in Analytics and Search Console. A large part, however, remains traffic-less, because users read the answer, remember the name, and later search directly for the brand. That is why evaluation also happens through mention, description quality, and recommendation rate — metrics that show progress even while session numbers remain unchanged.

Collaboration and implementation

aeo builds on the structures already in place at the company. We provide method, measurement, and steering; implementation can stay where it currently sits — with in-house teams, editorial staff, or IT. Where additional capacity or specializt knowledge is needed, we draw on a reputable partner network in coordination with you.

What we need for this is manageable: contact people from marketing, communications, and the subject-matter department, insight into content and data structures, access to the website, Analytics, and Search Console — and one person at management level who backs the goals and priorities.
