ChatGPT Ads: Advertising Where the Question Is Asked

Updated 12 October 2026

Paid AI visibility comes from booked ad placements below an AI answer — clearly marked, set apart, in the same field of view. Currently there is only one relevant system for this: ChatGPT Ads, bookable in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland since August 24, 2026. ChatGPT Ads is a separate offering alongside aeo: the lever that works immediately as long as budget flows — and that leaves the answer itself untouched.

Ad and answer are kept separate

Ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers. OpenAI separates paid placement from answer generation: the ad appears below the answer, not inside it, and is not a recommendation from the model. Ad budget does not change which sources a system selects.

Two things follow from this. First, ChatGPT Ads does not replace the work on organic visibility — it covers a different mechanism of impact. Paid placement works immediately, is tied to budget, and ends with it; organic visibility develops more slowly, persists, and also works where no ads are shown. Second, both positions work together: being named in the answer and standing below it with your own message is stronger than either position alone.

Why ChatGPT Ads follows its own logic

There are no keywords. Delivery is based on a description of the conversation: the role, the prior knowledge, and the decision-making situation in which the question is asked. Within the European Economic Area, no personalized signals are added — no previous chats, no memory, no advertising history. The question itself is the only thing that matters.

This shifts the decisive competence — and with it, the answer to the question of who should run the channel. It’s not the management of keyword lists that leads to results, but the systematic capture of real user questions by role, prior knowledge, and decision stage — the same process we use for measurement anyway. A prompt set is, at its core, already a context library for ads: the same analysis, two uses.

What we take on

Context strategy. Deriving ad contexts from your prompt set, grouped by decision stage and reconciled with OpenAI’s advertising rules. Plus selecting the formats currently enabled for your market.

Product feed and shopping setup. Preparing and submitting the feed according to OpenAI’s requirements. The same data also feeds organic product recommendations in ChatGPT.

Account and campaign structure. Registration, verification, campaign setup, target market and budget configuration, approval processes. OpenAI currently provides no central agency account — each account is set up individually.

Ad copy and landing pages. Titles and descriptions are limited to 50 and 100 characters; copy is drawn from the existing narrative architecture. Every advertised page is reviewed against the same principles that apply to organic visibility.

Measurement and attribution. OpenAI pixel and Conversions API, UTM structure, integration with existing analytics and CRM, set up in a privacy-compliant way.

The three billing models

Billing runs through an auction in which the ad’s relevance counts alongside the bid.

CPM

Charged per 1,000 impressions and optimized for reach.

CPC

Charged per valid click and optimized for likelihood of interaction.

oCPC

Also charged per valid click, but delivery is optimized toward a defined conversion event and requires working tracking.

Where no ads are shown

Not every question is reachable, and that determines whether the channel is a good fit. Ads are only seen by users on the Free and Go tiers; paid tiers remain ad-free. In sensitive conversation contexts — health, mental health, politics — no advertising is shown at all. What share of a prompt set is even advertisable therefore comes before budget planning.

How the two are measured together

Paid and organic visibility are evaluated against the same prompt set. On the organic side stand mention rate, description accuracy, recommendation rate, and citation rate; on the paid side, CPC, CPA, and the share of conversions from ads. Only this comparison makes it possible to decide where budget closes a gap — and where it pays for a position that would hold up anyway.

Reliable benchmarks for the German-speaking market do not exist. The channel is only a few weeks old, and published click prices come from the US market. We work with a defined test budget, formulated hypotheses, and fixed stop criteria.

We also check the evaluation logic itself against the state of research: we stay in professional exchange with the research that empirically studies visibility in generative systems. For a channel without benchmarks, that is the only available correction.
